Residential Home Safey Survey

A residential home safety survey is a process, to identify potential hazards and impove safety in the home. These surveys typically involve a visual inspection of the home, looking for issues like fire hazards, fall risks, and other potential dangers. The goal is to educate homeowners on how to make their homes safer and to provide recommendations for improvement.
Key aspects of a residential home safety survey:
  • Identification of hazards:
The survey assesses various aspects of the home to identify potential risks. This includes fire hazards (e.g., smoke alarms, electrical cords, heating systems), fall risks (e.g., stairs, slippery surfaces), and other safety concerns (e.g., storage of chemicals, access to medications).
  • Education and recommendations:
Surveyors provide information to homeowners on how to address identified hazards and improve overall safety. This may include recommendations for installing or maintaining smoke alarms, developing fire escape plans, storing items safely, and making modifications to reduce fall risks.
  • Voluntary participation:
In the City of Peekskill , residential fire safety surveys are offered as a public service and participation is voluntary.
Examples of what might be checked during a survey:
  • Smoke and carbon monoxide detectors: Ensuring they are present, working, and properly installed (including checking batteries and expiration dates).
  • Fire escape plan: Verifying that residents have a plan and know how to safely exit the home in case of a fire.
  • Electrical safety: Checking for frayed cords, overloaded outlets, and proper use of extension cords.
  • Heating and appliance safety: Ensuring proper maintenance of furnaces and chimneys, and safe use of appliances.
  • Storage of flammable materials: Checking for proper storage of items that could easily ignite.
  • Stair safety: Ensuring stairs are in good condition and free of tripping hazards.
  • Medication storage: Ensuring medications are stored out of reach of children.
By conducting a thorough home safety survey, residents can significantly reduce the risk of accidents and injuries, creating a safer living environment for themselves and their families.
